I always feel a little strange reporting on the passing of a celebrity, which is why I usually try to avoid it and I always have to try and figure out how to title the post. I’ve done it a couple of times, and only ever when it is a person whom I will miss seeing or hearing and where their passing has had an affect on me. Today is sadly one of those days as we have lost Sean Lock to cancer. His agent posted the message below to say that he passed away, aged 58, peacefully at home surrounded by his family, and I echo their words that we have today lost one of the great British comics.
I first saw Sean Lock as one of the team captains on 8 out of 10 cats and absolutely loved him on there, but always felt like where he REALLY came in to his own and where he seemed to be able to let go a little more and show that he really was a true comic genius was as a team captain on 8 out of 10 cats does countdown… A mashup series which had the country ins titches for years and there are just hours of compilation videos on some of his best jokes from that series… and they really were countless! Here are 2 of my absolute favorites!
I do think that for most of the nation his appearance as a panelist, especially for these 2 shows is where they know him from the most – it’s where he was most accessible, but where I personally think he absolutely thrived, and the proof of this is with 4 DVD releases, is the stand up stage. In my life I have seen just 2 live stand up shows and I am so glad to be able to count his Purple Van Man tour amongst those 2 shows. Seeing him live in my local theater was one of the funniest times I’ve had in my adult life – he was full of belly laughs from start to finish and if you don’t know him for his stand up career, do yourselves a favor and watch his specials. Lockipedia is one of his most well known ones I’d say and is the perfect entry to his career. You will not regret it!
My thoughts are with his family and friends and I hope that we can all use a big dose of Sean Lock this evening – I am sure that he would have wanted the nation in tears of laughter rather than sadness, and I think there are few British comics who can literally make you cry with laughter quite in the same way as he can.
The internet is absolutely awash with tributes to a great comic, from the worlds of celebrity and the countless people who have loved him as a comedian. I’m not going to put together a list of tributes here as a way to name drop everyone… I’m going to leave you to see the huge impact he made and dent he has left in the entertainment world and add just my own very humble tribute, because I for one really miss this incredible entertainer. Guys as good as Sean Lock don’t come around very often!
Absolute legend – rest in peace.
