Every Pokemon – Generation I

The first Generation of Pokemon – the generation that started it all, and what a huge movement that start turned in to. Generation I was active from 1996 until 1999 and covered the red, green, blue and yellow Pokemon titles on Game Boy and the Nintendo 3DS eventually through re-releases. These re-releases and the natural changes within the individual Pokemon to accommodate where their stories took them over the following 25 years do mean that some of these Generation I Pokemon are listed below as they are today, which is not necessarily how they were in 1996. For example at the time they had the bird type which was removed before release but the code remained, hence why the MissingNo glitch is the only bird type, or that Magnemite and Magneton were originally just Electric type until the Steel type was added in Generation II.

How many Pokemon are in Generation I?

That depends on whether or not you want to count a very special Pokemon. The Pokedex goes up to 151, meaning that there are 151 Pokemon which have been classified in this ingame system, but there is technically another one, making the total 152. That extra Pokemon is Pokedex number 000, called MissingNo… Not technically a proper Pokemon, but actually a glitch, hence why it’s not necessarily one which you’d want to count. Click on it’s name in the table if you want to learn more about one of the most famous computer game glitches in gaming history!

What are all of the Pokemon in Generation I?

The list below is meant to give you an idea of the name, type and evolutions of every Pokemon as they are today, but I will try to cover any of these changes in notes at the end if you’re interested and checking up on your knowledge!

Notes

  1. Nidoran (#29) can produce both male and female eggs but is the only one of its line which can reproduce.
  2. Clefairy (#35) and Clefable (#36), before the release of X and Y were Normal type rather than fairy type.
  3. Jigglypuff (#39) and Wigglypuff (#40), before the release of X and Y were Normal type rather than normal type and fairy type.
  4. Magnemite (#81) and Magneton (#82), before the release of gold and silver were electric types rather than electric type and steel type.
  5. Starmie (#121) is also known as the Mysterious Pokemon.
  6. Mr. Mime (#122), before the release of X and Y was a Psychic type rather than a psychic type and fairy type.
  7. Pinsir (#127) was originally meant to have a Generation II evolution called Plux which never happened.
  8. In beta versions of Pokemon Red & Blue Gyarados (#130) was called Skullkraken – personally I prefer that!
  9. Lapras (#131) is exclusive to shield.
  10. Ditto (#132) was originally going to have a Generation II evolution called Animon.
  11. Eevee (#133) has a number of different evolutions in different generations, making it unique enough for these to be dubbed as Eeveelutions.
  12. Omanyte (#138) is a fossil Pokemon which needs to be revived from the helix fossil.
  13. Omastar (#139) is often called Lord Helix due to the origins of Omanyte.
  14. Kabuto (#140) is a fossil Pokemon which needs to be revived from the dome fossil.
  15. Aerodactyl (#142) is a fossil Pokemon which needs to be revived from old amber
  16. Mew (#151) is only available through Nintendo events.

I'm a collector of pop culture items, with by far my biggest collection being in excess of 1,200 DVDs (yeah I still stay old school - can't wrap my head around the whole streaming thing yet), as well as various figures and Memorabilia (with most of these being McFarlane Walking Dead 5 inch figures, Funko Pop and Funko Pint Size Heroes, with a few other exceptions too). I'm a massive nerd and giant child at heart so feel free to have a chat about anything toy and movie related. My biggest movie passions are horror by far (especially slasher and zombie), sci fi and to a lesser extent action and comedy.
