Stuber Review

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

This came up on Sky Cinema just a few days ago and we were looking for a short film to watch before bed, so we actually didn’t have particularly high hopes. I do quite like Dave Bautista… I don’t think he’s necessarily the best actor in the world but he is damn funny and is not afraid to make fun of himself. This film is no different!

We spend much of the film following Bautista, a local cop, as he bungles his way through a case after being temporarily blinded. So expect a lot of classic slapstick comedy of him walking in to stuff and falling over things. There’s an amazing fight scene later on in the film, which combines the best of all of these elements.

At almost every turn you do not expect any of the trouble which he and his unwitting partner, Stu, the Uber driver get themselves in to, as their relationship really evolves throughout the film. Even though you want to be team Stu or team Victor (Bautista), you can’t help but find yourself conflicted throughout and ending settling for team Stutor. I can’t remember the last time I saw a film with such lovable characters, portrayed with that level of lovable passion and commitment.

This is definitely a comedy, but you don’t get left with just a single big belly laugh once every 10 minutes, with all of those condensed in to the trailer as well… You get giggles, interspersed with a few belly laughs from start to finish! Don’t expect it to be too sophisticated either… This is Dave Bautista and Kumail Nanjiani, not Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart (I know they’re not sophisticated humour either, but in Stuber it’s fairly reliant on fart jokes, lazy stereotypes and dick jokes)… Not that I’m complaining. They really were the perfect pairing for this film.

You know that it ALWAYS needs to sneak in somewhere, but I did like to see Bautista act as just any other actor without a need to throw in wrestling moves every 15 minutes.

Do yourself a favour and join these two amazing characters on what is one of the most eventful cops and robbers chases you’re likely to see this year!

I'm a collector of pop culture items, with by far my biggest collection being in excess of 1,200 DVDs (yeah I still stay old school - can't wrap my head around the whole streaming thing yet), as well as various figures and Memorabilia (with most of these being McFarlane Walking Dead 5 inch figures, Funko Pop and Funko Pint Size Heroes, with a few other exceptions too). I'm a massive nerd and giant child at heart so feel free to have a chat about anything toy and movie related. My biggest movie passions are horror by far (especially slasher and zombie), sci fi and to a lesser extent action and comedy.
