We’re pretty new to the streaming game and have decided to dip our toes in with Amazon Prime as they seem to have some of the best (at least tailored to my tastes) original shows. This certainly looked like it would be right up my street, as I’m a big fan of the movies.
As you’d expect this first series plays out in the same dystopian Purge universe as the films, so it has the same crazy ideas (you know the ones where being allowed to commit any crime right up to murder, but not including murder of politicians of course is thought to rid you of all your urges and thereby decrease crime for the rest of the year) and amazing locations. One thing which is kept the same are some of the amazing costumes! Just keep an eye out for the neon nuns… I think possibly some of the best purge outfits from the whole extended franchise.
The similarities don’t however continue throughout the whole fabric of the show. I think it’s nice that they have time to extend the shows across almost the full night, giving you a few glimpses of various stories and various characters throughout. The producers made a really nice job of skipping between stories and keeping to a fairly realistic time line… Showing the full madness of such a night.
BUT this is the purge, so whats the biggest thing you’re expecting?
Really elaborate ways to kill your fellow man right?
You do get some of this and there are still some very inventive deaths because after all even though people could spend their whole evening looting, destroying property, underage drinking, selling and consuming copious amounts of drugs amongst other things… Everyone goes full psycho and immediately opts for mindlessly killing everyone they see. Some of the deaths are still very elaborate and they are made to look all the more cinematically impressive by the costumes, but there’s a distinct lack of gore!
If the walking dead and game of thrones has taught us anything it is that not only is gore ok in tv shows these days, but it’s actually considered a bonus for today’s television viewing public. There is so much opportunity to let the roads run with blood in this show, but that’s one area where it doesn’t quite deliver to be honest.
I haven’t seen the second season yet but I do hope they ramp it up a bit in that season, and genuinely can’t wait to make a start on it though!
This is a show where you can just turn it on and switch off your brain for 40 minutes at a time… It’s just good fun which could turn up the deviance a little bit more to really ram the show home! it genuinely made me feel glad to have Amazon Prime though!
