Nerd News: Birds of Prey Trailer (2, UK Version) Reaction

I know this film is hitting the cinemas soon (7th February 2020 to be exact) and I haven’t done one of these yet for the trailer, but a new trailer was uploaded by Warner Bros a few days ago and I just got round to watching it… I went for the UK one, because, well I’m in the UK, and for some reason its 16 seconds longer than the American one!

Along with a load of gunf about who’s in the film and what the directors have worked on previously, blah blah blah, there was a little synopsis which read like this:

“You ever hear the one about the cop, the songbird, the psycho and the mafia princess? “Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)” is a twisted tale told by Harley herself, as only Harley can tell it. When Gotham’s most nefariously narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis, and his zealous right-hand, Zsasz, put a target on a young girl named Cass, the city is turned upside down looking for her. Harley, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya’s paths collide, and the unlikely foursome have no choice but to team up to take Roman down.”

When the trailer starts you immediately see Harley as her crazy self, committing a pointless crime, in a truly over the top, comic bookish and awesome fashion, whilst looking quite frankly fabulous. Followed by blowing up the jokers chemical factory with a lorry… Again over the top, crazy and absolutely awesome, before introducing the rest of the birds of prey (I’m just guessing that’s what this cute little group are calling themselves).

Now here’s the thing, they all look like they’re going to be awesome in the film at that point… They’re a bunch of sassy ladies, with tons of attitude, amazing style and of course a lot of sex appeal, who aren’t going to take shit from anybody! Is it just me who doesn’t want them to also be too cutesy and girly? Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got nothing from with injecting a film with a big dose of femininity and I love the look of this movie, but do I really want to believe that she’s that sad about the Joker, squeezing squirty cheese in her face, living in the bedroom of a 14 year old girl living in her grandmothers flat?

Sure you can shoehorn a hyena in to the room as well, but I want to see her decorate the place with mallets, guns, knives, street art… something to fuel her craziness… Hell, stick some hentai posters or something on the walls! Make me believe she’s a badass! PLEASE!!! The rest of the film does!

There is lots of fighting, there are some cool stunts involving vehicles and Harley commands an arsenal of awesome weapons lifted straight out of the comic books. Who doesn’t love seeing Margot Robbie wielding a baseball bat or MASSIVE mallet!

This film looks like its going to be dark and gritty (unless we’re in the weird kids / nans apartment or sniffing food in a car), with plenty of humor (I love that her hyena is named after Bruce Wayne), violence, sass, sexiness and attitude… Basically everything which people wanted from Suicide Squad (which is a film I loved by the way), but possibly actually executed well, and again with way less Joker (I believe absolutely zero this time) than what people wanted. I for one was a big fan of Leto’s Joker and would love to see him again.

All in all it looks like Birds of Prey is going to be a kickass fun comic movie, so I for one can’t wait!

    • Couldn’t agree more, I know she’s meant to be silly, I just hope they don’t make her so silly that she becomes less edgy… that’s what’s so appealing about her. Can’t wait although I’ll probably need to wait until the DVD release!
