I really like the Marvel cinematic universe (MCU) but I wouldn’t call myself a huge fan… A casual fan perhaps. What I love the most about these films, especially compared to the DC movies is the level of humor! Characters like Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, Star Lord, Drax, Rocket and Loki are inherently funny, and often that humor is layered to appeal to both kids and adults. When you take that away, Marvel doesn’t set itself apart as much from other franchises for me any more.
This is why for me some of the more bland characters don’t interest me as much in their stand alone films, when they don’t have the supporting cast of the avengers as a whole. Captain America, is a really popular character and yeah he’s the original Avenger, but yawn! Lighten up a little! Captain Marvel… Hawk Eye… War Machine, and yes… Black Widow, are all just a bit boring!
I know some of you will disagree greatly and I’d love to hear from you, but for me they just don’t do it, and their lack of humor and just real life brings them almost to the same Marvel level as Green Lantern… Which is at that level for a whole different set of reasons!
Anyway, now that I’ve got that out of the way, I wasn’t super excited about this film, which is set just after Captain America: Civil War, and the trailer opens with Romanoff (played again by Scarlett Johansen), looking just as miserable as ever – so for me… we’re off to a great start!
The premise seems to be that she’s going on the run, which for an agent such as hers shouldn’t be too hard. We know from the films to date that she has worked for many people and changed her identity numerous times, and this gets a quick nod while she’s on the train in this trailer. In doing so she returns home (which appears to literally be to her family flat) and what we appear to learn next is that maybe her sister would have made a much better Avenger… She appears to trump her in a fight, throwing Natasha against the wall, and as she hasn’t lived in the States for ages, has retained a far more bad ass Eastern European accent! Now, if you look at a write up of the film on Wikipedia it says that Yelena isn’t actually her sister but a sister figure… I didn’t know that, so I’m going to stick by what the trailer tells us and I’m going to keep calling them sisters – Sue me.
Her and her sister than have to go back to where it all started (which I’m guessing is some kind of training facility or organisation – as I said the character hasn’t interested me that much, so I don’t know their background too much), and her sister appears to have been pulled in to a fight she wasn’t expecting – well done sister Natasha!
During their preparations for which ever fight they’re getting in to, they also enlist the Red Guardian, which from the trailer I thought might have been their dad, but that doesn’t seem to be the case? Which is a shame as that might have added the humor which a film featuring black widow needed. Although having said that, the character himself (played by David Harbour who still looks suitably big after playing Hell boy) does seem to add some comic relief, which is nice to see!
At one point she goes sky diving without a parachute or wing suit of any kind, dodging debris like crazy… It’ll be interesting to see how she gets out of that one! Considering she doesn’t have any actual super powers, I think some times they give her abilities a little more artistic license than they perhaps deserve.
I’ve whined on a bit about how boring black widow is and that I looked at Wikipedia and now don’t really know what I’m expecting from the relationship between these characters… maybe I should have stayed away from that but that comes from not having a big passion for the franchise outside of movies. Anyone familiar with the comics I’m sure can fill us in on what the relationship between the 3 is. However, after all that I’m not going to say that I don’t want to see this film!
The stunts look amazing, visually the characters & their costumes look awesome, the action is likely to be balls to the wall from start to finish, it’s got a bit of comic relief and it just looks like a high octane Marvel film… I’ll be surprised if this film ends up being Green Lantern level work and certainly look forward to seeing more about it.
Although, the main thing I’ve left thinking is that I want a Red Guardian film now ’cause David Harbour knows how to bring action and comedy to a role! I just love that he looks like a homeless super hero!
