Nerd News: Trailer Reaction – The Grudge (2020)

I really want to start doing some videos for YouTube but I’m not quite there yet, get my confidence up and get my home office in to shape, so I’m going to do some trailer reaction posts instead. I think eventually trailer reaction videos would be a nice step… especially with films like this. But for now, you’ll just have to read my reactions – these posts shouldn’t be mega long and I won’t be giving away anything other than what’s in the trailer.

In all honesty I had no idea that this film was getting not just a reboot but a second reboot! And I think it really is a reboot of the same basic story because they obviously use a few scenes which are very similar to the 2004 American remake of the 2002 Japanese instant classic horror film, Ju-On. The main one which stands out for me is the hands coming out the back of the head in the shower, although personally I don’t feel like the scene looks as good this time around.

It looks like the creepy clicking character looks and sounds just as creepy as always, and as long as they keep all her weird movements I think you’re always on to a winner with this franchise… It is creepy as hell, each of the films is, so no doubt this one will do just as well. It does actually feel like they try to ramp up the gore factor a little, which I think is a great move and look forward to seeing it all in full context.

The effects look good, but I wonder whether it currently looks a little bit too light and crisp – I think the Grudge works better when it’s very dark and a little dirty, adding to suspense of ghost character. But knowing that it’s produced by Sam Raimi means that you can go in to it knowing you’re in good hands.

I for one am looking forward to it though and while I’ll probably miss the cinema release unless I can get a baby sitter I think I’m going to love pooping a bit in my living room – one thing which the Grudge films always manage to deliver on is cheap jump scares based on the fact that right from the start everyone is already creeped out a bit and expects to jump… Even the trailer made me jump once – gits! Can’t wait to see how many other idiots do stuff like get their face right next to a bath tub which looks like a dead body has been in it for 2 months turning in to soup… You just wouldn’t would you!

Looks like the release date will be 3rd January 2020.

I'm a collector of pop culture items, with by far my biggest collection being in excess of 1,200 DVDs (yeah I still stay old school - can't wrap my head around the whole streaming thing yet), as well as various figures and Memorabilia (with most of these being McFarlane Walking Dead 5 inch figures, Funko Pop and Funko Pint Size Heroes, with a few other exceptions too). I'm a massive nerd and giant child at heart so feel free to have a chat about anything toy and movie related. My biggest movie passions are horror by far (especially slasher and zombie), sci fi and to a lesser extent action and comedy.
